Emphasising the global relevance of India-Germany ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that cooperation between the two countries is important “for the whole of humanity,” as he addressed a joint press meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Ahmedabad.
“Cooperation between India and Germany is important for the whole of humanity,” PM Modi said, underlining that the partnership goes beyond bilateral interests and contributes to global stability, sustainability and technological progress.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the deep historical and cultural foundations of the relationship, recalling the role of Swami Vivekananda in strengthening intellectual links between the two countries.
“Swami Vivekananda formed a bridge between
India and Germany,” PM Modi said.
Welcoming Chancellor Merz to India and to his home state of Gujarat, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the German leader’s commitment to bilateral ties.
“I thank Chancellor Merz for his personal attention and commitment to the relationship,” he said.
Referring to Gujarat’s tradition of hospitality, the Prime Minister added, “We say in Gujarat that guests are welcomed with sneh and atmiyata. We welcome Chancellor Merz in that spirit.”
PM Modi noted that economic engagement between the two countries continues to expand, with nearly 2,000 German companies operating in India.
He said this reflects growing confidence in India as an investment destination and the strength of the India-Germany economic partnership.
Highlighting technology and sustainability as key pillars, the Prime Minister said India and Germany have advanced technology cooperation in renewable energy.
“We have advanced tech cooperation in renewable energy, and we have decided to establish an India-Germany Centre of Excellence,” he said.
The Prime Minister described collaboration in green hydrogen as transformational, stating, “Collaboration on green hydrogen projects will be a game changer.”
PM Modi also stressed that both countries are working together to build “secured, trusted and resilient supply chains,” an area of increasing importance amid global disruptions.
He said such cooperation would benefit not only India and Germany but also the wider global economy.
On defence ties, the Prime Minister said the two countries are advancing cooperation through greater collaboration in co-development and co-production.
He thanked Chancellor Merz for policy decisions that have facilitated closer defence engagement.
“I thank Chancellor Merz for relaxing norms enabling defence cooperation,” Modi said, describing it as a significant step forward in strategic ties.
Emphasising education and skilling as future drivers of cooperation, PM Modi invited greater academic engagement from Germany.
“I invite German universities to invest in India,” he said, noting that collaboration in education would strengthen innovation and human capital development.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz visited the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.
The two leaders later inaugurated the International Kite Festival-2026 at the Sabarmati Riverfront, where they interacted with artisans and participants, underscoring the cultural dimension of the visit.
According to official information, the visit coincides with the completion of 25 years of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership and 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
