Japanese fans have earned widespread praise on several occasions in the past for cleaning up stadiums after their team’s FIFA World Cup matches, and they continued that tradition at the 2026 tournament, which is being hosted across three countries.
Japanese fans once again stayed behind after the final whistle to clean up the stands following their heartbreaking defeat to Brazil.

Casemiro scored the equaliser for Brazil in the 56th minute before Gabriel Martinelli struck the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time (90+5′).
The goal by Martinelli not only helped Brazil secure a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Japan in their first knockout match of this year’s FIFA World Cup, but also earned Martinelli a place in the record books.
Martinelli’s goal in the 90+5th minute is the latest winning goal scored in normal time in the knockout stages of FIFA World Cup history.
Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães provided the assist for Martinelli’s winner after Casemiro had equalised with a header in the 56th minute.
