Konkona Sen Sharma is one of the most versatile actresses in the film industry, with some of the most loved films to her credit, including the recent Anurag Basu film Metro… In Dino. Konkona often chooses roles that showcase her versatility and don’t box her in. After being in the industry for 25 years, does it get easier for women to get meatier roles? The actress weighed in while speaking to us.
When asked if things have changed in these 25 years, Konkona Sen Sharma told News18 Showsha, “In some ways, I think, to a certain extent, perhaps in smaller-budget films or OTT films, to a certain extent, yes. But if you follow the money (laughs), then you will see that larger films will inevitably have larger-than-life male heroes.”
Explaining how,
according to her, this isn’t a problem of today, the actress further continued, “I don’t think this is necessarily a problem of today, but I think it’s kind of been like this for many, many years. Every year, you will find a handful of interesting films, films that don’t follow trends or a certain formula, but those kinds of films are few and far between.”
Konkona credits streaming platforms and short films for allowing female actors to get meatier roles. The actress told us, “To a certain extent, with streamers nowadays, there are some projects in which you will have female cops and things like that, or you will have women in negative or complex roles. But you will see mostly older women in such roles, by and large, except for some exceptions.”
