India is home to many cities with unique identities. Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh is known as the city of perfumes, and Vrindavan is called the city of devotion. Similarly, Kochi, also called Cochin, in Kerala,
is famously known as the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’. This title reflects its historical significance, strategic coastal location, and centuries-long role as a global trading hub.
Let’s explore why Kochi holds this special place.
Kochi’s Unique Heritage
Kochi is not just a port city; it is a melting pot of cultures and history. One of the most iconic sights is the large fishing nets (Cheena Vala) along its coast, believed to have been introduced in the 14th century by people from the court of Chinese explorer Zheng He.
The city’s Jew Town and the ancient Jewish prayer house showcase its multicultural heritage, while colonial architecture lines the streets of Fort Kochi.
Kochi is also home to St Francis Church, India’s first European church, reflecting its deep historical roots.
A Modern Trading Powerhouse
Even today, Kochi lives up to its title as the Queen of the Arabian Sea. It is the financial and industrial capital of Kerala, and its port is among the most important in India.
Remarkably, Kochi is the first city in the world to have an airport fully powered by solar energy.
Kochi’s prominence rose after a massive flood in the Periyar River in 1341, which destroyed the old port, Muziris. Since then, its scenic beauty and the aroma of spices earned it the royal title of the ‘Queen’.
Spices That Made Kochi Famous
Kerala, where Kochi is located, is one of India’s largest spice producers. Reports show that the state produces over 95% of India’s black pepper, along with other spices like cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
These spices contributed to Kochi’s historical role as a thriving global trade centre.
