Jamia Millia Islamia Protests: Students at Jamia Millia Islamia called off their protest after the university administration issued an order accepting key demands of the demonstrators, including a timeline for holding students’ union elections and the revocation of suspension orders and show-cause notices issued during the agitation.
When Will Jamia Students’ Union Elections Be Held?
According to the registrar’s order, elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) will be held 15 days after the constitution of the students’ union is approved. The university also agreed to revoke suspension orders and show-cause notices issued to students during the protest. A committee will be constituted to inquire into the actions of security
personnel during the agitation.
What Did Protesters Agree To?
The protesters agreed to issue a public apology for defamatory statements and social media posts against the university administration. The posts are to be taken down from social media channels with immediate effect. The administration said compliance with the order would be monitored. Following its issuance, the registrar directed the immediate withdrawal of the protest.
Why Were Jamia Students Protesting?
The agitation began on October 12, with students demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union, which was disbanded in 2006 following campus violence and disruptions to academic activities.
A group of students had been on a hunger strike as negotiations with the university administration remained stalled. The protest also led to heavy police deployment, barricading on campus and allegations of physical confrontations between students and security personnel.
Citing safety concerns amid the escalating situation, the university administration announced on Saturday that physical classes would be shifted online.
