Former British racer Martin Brundle opined that seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton intended to replicate the feats of the legendary Michael Schumacher in the iconic Ferrari red when he penned his move
to the Prancing Horse ahead of the ongoing season.
Hamilton is yet to win a race in the famous red of the Italian manufacturer, and Brundle felt that it might take some time to turn things around at Ferrari.
“He wanted to go there and do a Michael Schumacher,” Brundle said.
“Michael went with Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne, Jean Todt, Stefano Domenicali was there, and of course, the brilliance of the Ferrari team,” he added.
“It still took a number of years to turn Ferrari around. That’s really the last time they were truly dominant, truly the team to beat,” the Brit stated.
Former Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz also backed Hamilton as the Brit continues to endure a lacklustre debut campaign with the Italian manufacturer.
Hamilton joined Ferrari a high-profile move, but things haven’t gone to plan as the fabled manufacturer remains in search of their first win this season.
Ferrari opted to give Sainz’s seat to Hamilton ahead of the ongoing season in a massive switch which hasn’t really paid off yet and ironically enough remains the last man to win a race in Ferrari colours.
“I know people like that drama, especially when we’re talking about a seven-time world champion,” Sainz began.
“I side with Lewis, and it’s very difficult to join a team and stand out,” he added.
“Even more so in your first year, when your teammate knows the car and the team so well. It’s very, very difficult. I can’t explain how difficult it is,” the Spaniard reiterated.
