Vaibhav Sooryavanshi couldn’t stamp his growing authority against Pakistan in the Under-19 Asia Cup on Sunday (December 14), getting out for 5 (6).
The left-hander opened the innings alongside Ayush Mhatre
after Pakistan Under-19 asked them to bat first at the ICC Cricket Academy in Dubai. Sooryavanshi started in typical manner, even hitting an early boundary.
But on the second ball of the fourth over, left-arm quick Mohammad Sayyam banged one on middle and off to the batter, who couldn’t help but punch it back to him. It lobbed high in the air, and the bowler did well to grab it with both hands. Watch it here:

The youngser would be disappointed with the outing, but it needs to be remembered that he’s still a 14-year-old playing with cricketers four or five years his senior. He has been in good form too.
In the last match, Sooryavanshi produced a breathtaking 171 off 95 balls to power India to a crushing 234-run win over UAE as the visitors piled up a record 433/6, India’s highest total in U19 ODIs and the highest in the tournament’s history.
He smashed a U19-record 14 sixes, reached his fifty in 30 balls and century in 56, and added a dominant 212-run stand with Aaron George, while Vihaan Malhotra and George also scored 69 each.
UAE were never in the chase, collapsing to 48/5 early before fifties from Prithvi Madhu and an unbeaten Uddish Suri helped them limp to 199/7 in their 50 overs.
So far, he has kept himself grounded despite the extra attention due to his talent. After the match, he was told how he had gone past Virat Kohli as the most searched personality on the internet.
“I don’t pay attention to these things. I keep the focus on my game. Yes, I do hear about these developments and it does feel nice. I look at it, feel good about it and then move forward,” Vaibhav said while speaking at the post-match presentation.
