Afghanistan and Gujarat Titans (GT) spinner Rashid Khan on Saturday (May 5) broke Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) legend Sunil Narine’s record for most three-wicket hauls for an overseas spinner in IPL history.
Rashid picked up his 18th IPL fifer against the Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, moving past Narine, Amit Mishra, and Ravindra Jadeja among all spinners, and staying only behind Yuzvendra Chahal, who has 23 three-fers. Overall, only Jasprit Bumrah (25), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (21), and Lasith Malinga (19) have more three-fers than Rashid.

The leg-spinner was on fire against the Royals. He came into the attack when RR were at 87/3 in the eighth over, trying to rebuild in the 230-run
chase.
Dhruv Jurel looked in brilliant form for his 24 (10) but became Rashid’s first victim, miscuing a cut and playing onto his stumps. Two balls later, Rashid did his bread and butter: making Donovan Ferreira believe that he’d bowl a googly, but surprising him with a leg-break to castle his stumps.
Shubham Dubey hit the first six off Rashid in the 12th over, but on the next ball, the Afghan took his revenge with a full googly around off to bowl him out, too. Rashid made it four with the final nail in the coffin, the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja, catching him plumb in front.
This was only Rashid’s third four-wicket haul, a stat where he’s much behind the best bowlers in the league. But, notably, Rashid has played two fewer seasons of the IPL than Chahal, four fewer than Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah, and eight fewer than Malinga.
“Just tried to hit the right areas in this match,” Rashid said after the match. “That was the most important thing, hit the right length. I feel that if I pitched it in the right areas, I would get wickets. It’s so good, it’s important to have players around you. They have played a lot in India, so they have good information. Modern cricket demands more variations.”
