Around 40 people were rescued after a fire broke out at a high-rise residential building in Mumbai’s Andheri West on Thursday morning, with emergency teams carrying out a swift evacuation. The blaze also
affected the residence of filmmaker Sandeep Singh, who was later assisted by actors Ankita Lokhande and Vicky Jain.
According to PTI, the fire was reported around 10 am at Sorrento Tower, a 23-storey building located near Country Club on Veera Desai Road. Civic officials said rescue operations were immediately launched following the incident.
A civic official said that nearly 30 to 40 people were evacuated from the refuge area on the 16th floor using the staircase. Three others, including a woman, were rescued from a flat on the 15th floor with the help of breathing apparatus.
The official added that the fire damaged electrical wiring and other components inside the electrical shaft between the 10th and 21st floors. Items such as routers, shoe racks and wooden furniture placed near ducts on several floors were also affected. The fire caused extensive damage to parts of the 12th, 13th and 14th floors of the building.
The 14th floor houses the premises of filmmaker Sandeep Singh, who is known for producing films including Mary Kom, Sarbjit, Aligarh, Jhund, Savarkar, Safed and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Singh had recently been discharged from Kokilaben Hospital after undergoing treatment for a hernia.
Actors Ankita Lokhande and her husband Vicky Jain, who are close friends of Singh, stepped in to help him following the incident. As a precautionary measure, they took him to their residence after his home was affected by the fire.
Entertainment portal TellyChakkar shared a series of pictures on Instagram showing Ankita, Vicky and Sandeep together, reportedly taken inside hospital premises. None of them has posted about the incident on their personal social media accounts so far.
Fire officials said at least four fire engines and additional equipment were deployed at the site. The fire was brought under control by 11:37 am. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
