Kanpur News: A routine delivery turned frightening in Kanpur when a young delivery rider riding through a poorly lit road suddenly disappeared into a massive open sewer pit. The dramatic fall was captured on CCTV, while nearby residents rushed to the spot after hearing his screams and pulled him and his bike out.
The incident took place late on Tuesday night, around 12:30 am, in the Hindustan Compound area of Jajmau. The rider was reportedly travelling with an order when he failed to spot the large pit in the middle of the road because of the darkness.
Rider Falls Into Pit While Delivering Order
According to local accounts cited by Amar Ujala and other reports, the rider was approaching from the bridge side when his motorcycle went straight into the open excavation. The bike fell into the pit
with him, leaving him trapped underneath it.
His cries alerted people nearby, who gathered at the spot and managed to pull him out. He was taken to a nearby private nursing home for first aid before his family shifted him to another hospital for further treatment.
Amar Ujala identified the rider as 27-year-old Nitin Gupta, a resident of Subhash Road, and reported that he suffered injuries including a possible fracture to his nose. His helmet helped prevent a serious head injury.

Open Pit Was Left For Around 15 Days
Residents said the road had been left in a dangerous condition for around 15 days following work on a damaged sewer line. According to local residents, the sewer line had broken and caused the road to cave in. The line was subsequently repaired with a wider pipe, but the large pit was allegedly not filled and the road was not restored. Reports put the opening at roughly 4 feet deep and around 11 metres long.
Residents also said there were no proper barricades or warning signs around the opening. The absence of adequate street lighting made the hazard particularly difficult to see after dark.
They claimed that other bikers and pedestrians had also faced problems at the spot in the past.
No Streetlight Made The Hazard Hard To Spot
The road reportedly has electric poles but lacks functioning streetlights around the accident site. Locals said the darkness made it difficult for approaching motorists to identify the open pit.
Residents told reporters that barricading, warning signs and proper lighting could have alerted the rider to the danger. They have now demanded that the authorities fill the pit, repair the road and improve lighting in the area.
CCTV Captures The Fall
CCTV footage from a nearby building captured the incident. The video shows the rider travelling along the road before his motorcycle suddenly plunges into the opening.
The footage was subsequently shared on social media and began circulating widely. One post carrying the CCTV clip was shared on X on September 16, with the accompanying description identifying the location as Hindustan Compound in Jajmau.
The video has prompted online discussion about road safety and the responsibility of civic authorities to secure roads after repair work. Reports said social media users expressed anger over the absence of barricades and lighting around the open pit.
Councillor Says Pit Will Be Filled
Following the accident, residents stepped up their demand for immediate action. Councillor Fakr Iqbal said the sewer-line work had been carried out by the Municipal Corporation and was complete. He said the pit would be filled and the road levelled.
The incident has nevertheless renewed questions about what happens to roads after underground repair work. Residents argue that completing the sewer repair is not enough if a deep excavation remains open without lighting, barricading or warning signs.
For the delivery rider, the helmet and quick response from local residents helped prevent the accident from becoming more serious. But the CCTV footage has also brought renewed attention to the danger posed by an open pit left in the middle of a dark, functioning road.
