For Nupur Sheoran, the mantra is clear: Silver now, Gold later.
The Indian heavyweight boxer discussed her ambitions of winning the top prize for her nation in the upcoming Boxing World Cup, as she returned to Delhi on Tuesday after securing a silver medal at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool.
India fielded a 20-member contingent at the inaugural edition of the event, conducted under the aegis of World Boxing, the breakaway governing body formed in 2023.
The squad delivered three medals—a significant breakthrough for the nation on the global stage.
Nupur was the first among the Indian boxers to guarantee a medal, becoming the nation’s trailblazer in Liverpool.

“I won my medal before the others did. So, in that moment, I felt so proud of having won a medal for my country,” Nupur told ANI after landing back in Delhi to a warm reception.
Her achievement set the tone for a memorable campaign, later capped by gold medals for Jaismine and Minakshi Hooda.
Final Bout: Narrow Defeat in a Nail-Biter
In the final, Nupur faced Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska in a dramatic contest that ended 2-3 in the European’s favor. Despite her height and reach advantage, Nupur struggled to impose her rhythm. Kaczmarska’s relentless aggression and sharp body shots gradually turned the tide.
The decisive moment came in the final round, when Kaczmarska landed a clean uppercut that shifted momentum. Exhausted after three punishing rounds, Nupur could not recover and had to settle for silver in what was her maiden World Championships final.
Eyes on World Cup Gold
For Nupur, the silver medal was only the beginning. The 22-year-old boxer is already targeting the World Cup in November.
“Now that I have won a silver (at the World Boxing Championships), I will definitely bring gold next for the country in the World Cup that will happen in November,” she vowed with determination.
Homecoming and Recovery
After her high-intensity campaign, Nupur emphasized the need to rest and refuel before resuming preparations.
“It has felt amazing to have been welcomed back home so warmly. Now, it’s all about getting some good sleep, helping myself to good food, and recovering,” she said with a smile.
