Something extraordinary must have happened when a batter reacts to a reprieve with a wide smile rather than relief. Why else would Virat Kohli, seated in the comfort of the dressing room, would have hands on his head in disbelief?
The moment came in the eighth over of India’s chase of 301 against New Zealand in the first ODI. Captain Shubman Gill slashed a fierce cut through backward point, only for Glenn Phillips to launch himself full stretch, left hand outstretched, in a breathtaking attempt to pluck the ball out of thin air.
Phillips ultimately failed to complete what would have been a sensational one-handed catch, but the reactions told the story. Gill could only smile as did Rohit Sharma at the non-striker’s end, and Kohli could only marvel
at the audacity of the effort from afar.

The three-match ODI series between India and New Zealand began on Sunday at the Baroda Cricket Stadium. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, New Zealand rode half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell, Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls to post a competitive 300/8 in their 50 overs.
