Fame often looks shiny from the outside. But inside many successful families, there are quiet trade-offs. In the case of Priyanka Chopra, that cost, her mother admits, was paid at home. Long before global premieres, red carpets and Hollywood headlines, Priyanka was an unsure teenager pushed gently but firmly towards a film career she did not even want. Behind that decision stood her mother, Madhu Chopra, who now speaks openly about the emotional toll that journey took on the family, especially on Priyanka’s younger brother. After winning the Miss World title in 2000, offers poured in for Priyanka Chopra. But acting was never the plan. Madhu has recalled that her daughter was academically inclined and hesitant about cinema. The doubt was so intense
that when Priyanka signed her debut Tamil film Thamizhan, there were visible tear marks on the contract. To support her daughter, Madhu began travelling constantly with 18-year-old Priyanka. Their father, Dr Ashok Chopra, remained busy with his medical work. That left Priyanka’s brother, Siddharth Chopra, largely on his own during his teenage years. Speaking earlier on the Something Bigger Show, Madhu did not soften her words while reflecting on that phase. She said, “Siddharth was the collateral damage to all of Priyanka’s success, because their dad (Dr Ashok Chopra) was working, I was with Priyanka, he just grew up on his own and he was a teenager at that time. He, I think, was collateral damage for me.” She added, “When I think about it, these are certain things that you had to deal with.” Talking about Siddharth, who got married in 2024, Madhu admitted that she still worries about him. She said, “I see him struggling everyday and I feel that, okay god has blessed you, so just count your blessings, one by one and it will surprise you what the lord has done. I count my blessings everyday. I have two great kids, who love me, care for me.” On Dr Stuti Khare Shukla’s YouTube channel, Madhu also spoke about managing Priyanka’s early career, her own medical practice, and household duties. Despite the chaos, she insisted that time with her children was never compromised. She said, “When I was with them, it was 100 percent children’s time. That was really good. I think that’s how they could imbibe the work ethics also, that you have to work hard if you want to achieve something and also give time to yourself, your family and your life.” Madhu also pointed out the difference between her children’s routines, saying, “I am an early riser. I wake up at 5:30 am and I start my day. My son is not such an early riser but still he is up by 8:30 am. But Priyanka, depending on the kind of work she is doing, she will be up at 4 also if needed.” Today, Siddharth lives in India with his wife Neelam. Priyanka balances a global career while living in the US with husband Nick Jonas and their daughter Malti Marie.
