Legendary Indian batter Rohit Sharma opened the innings for Mumbai Indians in their second match of IPL 2026 on Saturday, April 4, against Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium and scored 35 runs from 26 balls. The 38-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai hammered 5 fours and 1 six during his stay at the crease before Nitish Rana completed his catch off Axar Patel’s bowling. But before making his way back to the pavilion in the 10th over of MI’s innings in the match taking place at the iconic stadium in Delhi, Rohit entered his name in the history books. He broke MS Dhoni’s record of hitting the most sixes against one team in the IPL by an Indian batter.
Dhoni, who is part of CSK‘s IPL 2026 squad, has hammered 50 sixes so far against Royal
Challengers Bengaluru, whereas the six off Vipraj Nigam’s bowling on the sixth ball of the seventh over on Saturday helped Rohit extend his tally of sixes to 51 against Delhi Capitals.
The world record of hitting most sixes against one team in the world’s richest franchise cricket league is in the name of Chris Gayle. Gayle hammered 61 sixes in 16 IPL matches against Punjab Kings for two teams – Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru – and 54 sixes in 19 IPL matches against KKR for RCB and PBKS.
