Sydney Sweeney Shares How Portraying Christy’s Character Impacted Her Life
During the special screening, the Anyone But You actress shared, “It taught me a lot about myself, actually, throughout the entire process. She taught me how to stand up for myself more and feel stronger in my personal life and my work life.” She further added, “We both
fight our own fights in different types of rings, and, yeah, check in on your friends and make sure they’re all okay.”
Previously, during a post-screening Q&A at HIFF, Sweeney shared how Christy Martin was involved in the production of the film. “She kind of became my best friend. Having her with us was a really powerful experience,” she shared, explaining that she never had “the person who I’m portraying watch me.” Talking about Christy Martin’s presence on the set, Sweeney shared, “I just wanted her there the entire time because I was able to study her and listen to her and have her thoughts and opinions there whenever I needed.”
What Do We Know About Christy?
Directed by David Michod, Christy revolves around former professional boxer Christy Martin’s life and career. The film highlights Christy’s rise from a small town in West Virginia to becoming a boxing legend and the severe domestic abuse and personal battles she endured throughout the years. The official synopsis of the film reads, “Christy Martin never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia—until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakeable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (played by Ben Foster).”
Alongside highlighting Christy’s professional rise, the film also highlights the years of abuse she endured because of her husband, who used to manage her career. After asking for a divorce in 2010, Christy survived a brutal stabbing and shooting by him at their own house. Later, he was arrested and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Alongside Sydney Sweeney, the film stars Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brien and Ethan Embry, among others. The film is set to hit the theatres on November 7, 2025, in the United States.
