At a time when conversations around stray dogs, relocation, and responsibility are growing louder across the country, singer Mohit Chauhan has chosen to react not with arguments, but with music. His new
song, Meri Aawaaz, is a personal attempt to speak for animals who are often discussed, moved, or blamed, but rarely heard. Why This Song Was Made Meri Aawaaz was not planned as a project or campaign. It came from discomfort. Mohit Chauhan says the song grew out of years spent close to nature and animals, and a growing sadness at how strays are increasingly seen as inconveniences rather than living beings. “The idea came from a sense of pain, empathy and responsibility. For years, I shared my life with animals and nature. When I realised that we no longer see them as living beings or as souls, but instead as problems to be dealt with, I was deeply distressed.” The Moment That Triggered It The singer explains that recent debates around relocating stray dogs became the turning point. The language used, he felt, lacked compassion and erased the animals from the conversation altogether. “When the issue of relocation came up, all those emotions found their way into this song. I felt I could become the voice of the voiceless.” For Mohit, the concern was not policy alone, but the lack of empathy. “In all the discussions around relocating them or treating them in inhumane ways, their voice was completely missing. That’s when I thought of expressing it through music.” Written by Prarthana Gehlot, the lyrics of Meri Aawaaz are meant to confront, not accuse. Mohit describes the song as a reminder of values that have long been part of Indian culture. “The lyrics are meant to speak on their behalf, to carry their message forward. Existence, compassion, and kindness have always been a part of our tradition. I can’t say how much impact this song will have on policy decisions, but if it makes even a few people pause, reflect, and think about kindness, then I will believe that my song has made a difference.”
