Suryakumar Yadav made history as India and New Zealand face off at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday for the fifth and last T20I of the five-match series.
Suryakumar Yadav became just the third Indian to score 3,000 T20I runs.
SKY also became the fastest in the World to get that mark in terms of balls faced. He achieved this milestone in just 1822 balls. UAE captain Muhammad Waseem is second, taking 1947 balls to reach the same mark. England’s Jos Buttler follows with 2068 balls. Former Australia captains Aaron Finch and David Warner are also prominent on the list, needing 2077 and 2113 balls respectively. Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli come next, requiring 2149 and 2169 balls to achieve 3000 runs.
Before this match, Suryakumar had accumulated 2,967 runs in 103 T20Is and 97 innings at an average of 36.62 and a strike rate of 164.74, with four centuries and 23 fifties, and a top score of 117.
He trails only Indian icons Rohit Sharma (4,231 runs in 159 matches at an average of 32.05, strike rate of 140.89, including five centuries and 32 fifties) and Virat Kohli (4,188 runs in 125 matches at an average of 48.69, strike rate of 137.04, with a century and 38 fifties) on the country’s all-time T20I charts.
Only 11 batters have reached the 3,000-run milestone in the format, with Rohit at the top of this elite group.
Suryakumar reached the 3000-run mark in T20Is, becoming the second-fastest Indian to achieve this landmark, following Virat, who did so in 81 innings.
Surya had the opportunity to join MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma as the fourth Indian to score 1,000 runs in T20Is as captain. He was 73 runs short before the start of the fifth T20I match. But SKY was dismissed for 63.
After a slump starting towards the end of 2024 that largely continued into 2025, Suryakumar has made a strong comeback in this series. His fluent wristwork and trademark flicks, drives, and sweeps are once again captivating fans.
