India on Monday strongly condemned the recent attacks on United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon, after an Indonesian peacekeeper serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed and another critically injured in an explosion near one of the mission’s positions.
In a statement, the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations said it condemned the attack and called on all parties to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel deployed in conflict zones.
The condemnation comes after a projectile struck a UNIFIL position near Adchit Al Qusayr in southern Lebanon on March 29, killing one peacekeeper and critically injuring another.
The United Nations confirmed the incident, with UNIFIL saying the projectile explosion had directly
hit one of its bases. The mission described it as the second fatal incident involving peacekeepers in less than 24 hours, further underlining the deteriorating security environment in southern Lebanon.
Two UNIFIL peacekeepers were tragically killed in south Lebanon today, when an explosion of unknown origin destroyed their vehicle near Bani Hayyan. A third peacekeeper was severely injured, and a fourth was also hurt.

India, one of the longstanding contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, stressed the need to protect Blue Helmets and uphold the sanctity of UN missions operating in volatile regions.
The attack has triggered fresh concern over the safety of peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon, where hostilities have intensified amid the broader regional conflict involving Israel, Hezbollah, Iran, and allied groups.
UNIFIL, which monitors the cessation of hostilities and supports stability along the Lebanon-Israel border, has increasingly found itself exposed to crossfire and military escalation in recent months.
India’s response places renewed diplomatic focus on the growing risks faced by peacekeepers as the conflict in West Asia continues to widen, drawing in not just regional actors but also international personnel tasked with maintaining fragile stability.
