Music fans around the world are sending their wishes to one of R&B’s most beloved voices after news emerged about a serious health setback. The singer, whose songs have soundtracked generations of love stories and Disney memories, is currently receiving medical attention.
Veteran R&B star Peabo Bryson has suffered a stroke and is undergoing treatment, according to a statement shared by his representative with Variety on Sunday.
The statement read: “Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and balladeer, Peabo Bryson — the voice behind the Oscar-winning Disney songs ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘A Whole New World’ — has suffered a stroke and is currently under medical care.
“At this time, the family requests privacy as they navigate this deeply
personal moment together. The thoughts, prayers and love of friends and fans are welcomed and deeply appreciated.”
Bryson, 75, is widely celebrated for his smooth vocals and romantic ballads that dominated radio charts for decades. While many younger listeners know him as the voice behind Disney classics, his career stretches back much further, making him one of R&B’s most enduring performers.
Among his most popular recordings are “Beauty and the Beast,” performed with Celine Dion, and “A Whole New World,” his iconic duet with Regina Belle from Disney’s Aladdin. He also found success with songs such as “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love,” “You’re Looking Like Love to Me” and “As Long as There’s Christmas.”
Born in South Carolina, Bryson began his musical journey in the 1970s as a member of Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display. He later launched a solo career after signing with Atlanta-based Bang Records, releasing his debut album in 1976 before moving to Capitol Records the following year.
The transition proved successful. Bryson soon built a steady run of R&B hits, including “Feel the Fire,” “Reaching for the Sky,” “I’m So into You” and “Crosswinds,” helping establish him as one of the genre’s standout voices.
His crossover success reached new heights in 1984 when “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again” became his first Top 10 pop hit. He followed it up with tracks such as “Show and Tell” and “Can You Stop the Rain,” further cementing his place in the music industry.
Beyond music charts, Bryson also made a mark on television. In 1985, he appeared on the soap opera One Life to Live and contributed vocals to its theme song. The version became so popular that it was adopted as the show’s main theme and featured in every episode for the next seven years.
As Bryson continues to receive medical care, fans across generations are reflecting on a career that has produced timeless love songs, award-winning performances and some of Disney’s most memorable musical moments.
