At least 11 people were killed, and 19 others were injured after two government buses collided head-on in Sivaganga district in Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
The incident took place in Kummangudi, around five kilometres from Pillaiyarpatti in Sivaganga district, when one of the buses, heading towards Karaikudi, crashed with another passenger bus, which was travelling towards Madurai.
The impact left several passengers trapped inside the vehicles before local residents and emergency teams pulled them out.
Videos from the site that surfaced on social media platforms showed bodies lying in a row on the ground. In one of the videos, a woman was seen leaping from the shattered front section of the bus, its windshield completely blown out. Another survivor sat
on the ground with blood streaming from her forehead.
Emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, and officials said further information on the cause of the accident and the condition of those admitted is still awaited.
Authorities said the toll may rise as some of the passengers are in critical condition.
A probe has been launched to determine the cause of the accident. Emergency crews are still on the scene, and traffic along the stretch has been temporarily curtailed.
