Many women in India routinely face unsettling experiences like being watched, followed, or subjected to inappropriate gestures in public places. It is a reality that many have come to know all too well.
But this time, not a woman, but a young man shared that he found himself in a similar situation during a train journey, leaving him feeling disturbed and unsafe.
The incident, which was recorded on June 25 near Ambattur in Chennai, was shared by the boy on Instagram, who alleged that a fellow passenger continuously stared at him for nearly 15 to 20 minutes without looking away. He shared that the prolonged gaze made him increasingly uncomfortable during the journey.
“As a boy, I had to face a very uncomfortable situation where this man kept staring
at me continuously for around 15–20 minutes without looking away,” he wrote. The boy shared that he initially tried to ignore the behaviour but gradually began feeling increasingly uncomfortable and unsafe. He said, “Feeling disturbed and unsafe, I started recording the incident.”
The clip showed the man making inappropriate facial expressions. The boy said that after filming for a while, he confronted the passenger and asked him, “Why are you staring at me?” in what he described as an angry tone. Instead of responding, the man got up immediately and moved to another compartment.
The video has since caught the attention of many on the platform, with many women sharing how they frequently face similar experiences on public transport and crowded public spaces.
“This is how we girls face everyday,” one user said.
“So sorry that happened, man; this is why we need better laws in this country. No one is safe till everyone is,” quipped another person.
Someone else remarked, “This is what women face in India while travelling on a daily basis. Think as a man, you felt uncomfortable.”
“Dude, you’re a boy; you must wear your clothes properly. At least wear something that used to cover your whole body!!!! It wasn’t that uncle’s fault; it’s your fault you’re not wearing proper clothes,” an individual sarcastically said.
Meanwhile, a different person highlighted, “The fact that people don’t understand is that boys and men do get sexually assaulted and get badly touched in crowded trains by these kinds of people on a daily basis, and no one even speaks about it, and in this it’s not about gender, it’s about the mentality and some strict actions to stop these kinds of things from happening!”
