Aizawl, Sep 18 (PTI) A four-stream waste collection and segregation system has been launched in Mizoram’s capital Aizawl, with an aim to improve solid waste management and recycling, officials said on Friday.
Under the four-stream system, waste will be collected and segregated into ‘wet waste’ (biodegradable), ‘dry waste’ (non-biodegradable and recyclable), ‘sanitary waste’ (non-biodegradable requiring careful handling), and ‘special-care waste’ that could pose risks to human health and the environment.
The waste would be collected in separate containers and transported, processed and disposed of separately, they said.

in Aizawl.
The new system, launched at the AMC Auditorium in Thuampui area here in the presence of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister K Sapdanga and Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena on Thursday, was introduced in line with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
The initiative was rolled out in seven of the 19 wards of the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), the officials said.
Speaking at the launch, Sapdanga said cleanliness is an important indicator of development, and urged residents, community organisations and churches to work together to ensure the success of the new system.
He said Aizawl has been dubbed as one of the cleaner cities in India, and called upon AMC corporators and officials to maintain the city’s reputation through sustained civic participation and the spirit of ‘Tlawmngaihna’, a Mizo value of selflessness or voluntary service.
According to AMC Assistant Architect Veronica Vanlalhriata, the municipal corporation has generated 464.395 tonnes of compost from biodegradable waste collected in the city over the past two years, earning more than Rs 26 lakh in revenue. PTI CORR ACD
