A woman narrowly escaped death after a speeding car allegedly driven by an intoxicated man struck her on a pavement in Bengaluru’s Sahakara Nagar on New Year’s Eve.
The incident occurred around 10 pm on December 31 near a shopping mall, at a time when large crowds had gathered across the city to welcome the New Year. The woman survived the impact and was rushed for medical assistance.

The incident comes despite the strict security arrangements announced by city authorities for New Year celebrations. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh had earlier said elaborate traffic and safety measures were put in place, with a special emphasis on women’s safety.
According to the police, nearly 20,000 personnel were deployed across the city. The force included teams from law and order, traffic, crime units, reserve platoons, striking parties, anti-sabotage squads, anti-terror teams and specialised crime units.
Several parts of the city known for their vibrant nightlife, including MG Road, Brigade Road, Church Street and Indiranagar, saw massive crowds. These areas were lit up with decorative lights and filled with music, DJs and celebrations, while restaurants and pubs hosted special countdown events.
Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
