Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci reunited after nearly 20 years for The Devil Wears Prada 2. The film was released earlier this month and has been performing well at the box office. Fans of the franchise can’t stop praising the sequel and are already anticipating whether there could be a part 3. Now, director David Frankel has reacted to this buzz.
In a chat with Variety, David said he never thought he would even make a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. He mentioned, “I said, ‘Never again,’ and here we are… So, I certainly would never say, ‘Never again,’ again.” Does this mean that there could possibly be a The Devil Wears Prada 3?
“If there was an opportunity to revisit the characters and to share a few months with these
wonderful actors again, obviously, I’d love it,” the director said. The sequel ends with Miranda, Andy and Nigel saving Runway Magazine’s future with the help of a new character. It also shows Emily taking on a new role at a fashion house.
The sequel also introduced new characters to the franchise. “There are very, very funny people in this movie. Justin Theroux is hilarious. BJ Novak is hilarious. Caleb Hearon is hilarious. Simone Ashley, in little moments, steals every scene. Helen J Shen is brilliant. So, it’s just nice to bring in a new generation of actors and let them play,” David Frankel said.
David also recalled Anne Hathaway’s take on the sequel: “We were getting the band back together for a new album and going on tour and playing the new songs, but the audience also wants to hear the old hits. So, it’s a little bit of sprinkling in the old hits with the new stuff.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened to massive numbers worldwide. The film already crossed the $200 million mark in its opening weekend and even managed to recover its reported budget within just 24 hours of release. Interestingly, the sequel’s release has also boosted interest in the original 2006 film.
Data from Nielsen shows that streaming viewership for The Devil Wears Prada jumped by over 428% between March and April. Given its current pace, the sequel is expected to surpass the lifetime earnings of the first film, which had ended its run at $327 million worldwide.
