Children’s Day 2025: History

The first celebration of Children’s Day in India took place on July 30, 1949. On November 14, 1957, the foundation stone of the Indian Council of Child Welfare (ICCW) was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in the presence of Nehru.

During this ceremony, the government of India passed a special order, declaring November 14 as “National Children’s Day.” Following Nehru’s death in 1964, it was decided to officially celebrate November 14, annually, as Children’s Day to honour the late Prime Minister.
