Marvel Studios has finally confirmed what fans have been speculating for years. The first teaser of Avengers: Doomsday was unveiled by Marvel Entertainment on its official YouTube channel on Tuesday, announcing the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America. The teaser was previously screened exclusively in theatres alongside James Cameron’s latest release, Avatar: Fire and Ash, before making its way online.
Set to release on December 18, 2026, Avengers: Doomsday marks the next major team-up film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The brief but emotionally charged teaser opens on a serene note, set on a quiet farm as a soft piano version of the iconic Avengers theme plays in the background. Steve Rogers is seen riding
a motorcycle toward his home, instantly evoking nostalgia for longtime MCU fans.
As the teaser unfolds, Steve appears wearing a blue helmet reminiscent of his Captain America suit while holding a newborn baby in his arms, hinting at a deeply personal chapter in his story. The teaser concludes with the words, “Steve Rogers will return for Avengers: Doomsday,” displayed on screen, followed by a countdown timer that ends exactly one year before the film’s theatrical release.
The Russo Brothers, who are returning to direct the film, also shared the teaser on Instagram. Their caption read, “The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this…”
From Endgame to Doomsday: what lies ahead
Marvel fans last saw Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame (2019), where he completed his mission of returning the Infinity Stones to their rightful places across time after defeating Thanos. In the film’s emotional closing moments, an elderly Steve returned to the main MCU timeline and passed on his iconic red-and-white Vibranium shield to Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie, officially naming him the new Captain America.
After handing over the shield, Steve chose a quiet life, travelling back in time to reunite with his beloved Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell. Since then, Chris Evans’ future in the MCU remained uncertain—until now.
Evans is not the only original Avenger making a comeback in Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr is set to return to the MCU as the film’s primary antagonist, Doctor Doom, in what is being described as a multiverse-spanning spectacle. The film also features a massive ensemble cast, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Simu Liu, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman.
Adding to the excitement, several characters from the X-Men universe will cross over into the MCU, with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, James Marsden, Channing Tatum and Rebecca Romijn confirmed to appear.
With Chris Evans officially back as Steve Rogers, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s most ambitious films yet.
