In a major move, the Indian selection committee has dropped Suryakumar Yadav from the T20I squad nearly three months after he led the team to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. The decision not only ends his tenure as captain but also sees him lose his place in the squad, with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel naming Shreyas Iyer as his successor for India’s upcoming international assignments.
A combination of Suryakumar‘s form and the team’s long-term plans for the next World Cup cycle contributed to the management’s decision.
“With regards to Surya obviously it’s a tough one having just won the world cup but as it happens after most world cups, we try and reassess what your best way forward is,” Agarkar said on Saturday.
“(It was) Partly his
own form but also looking at the next two-year cycle or a little bit more – till the next world cup – we thought this was the best way forward. Like I said, Shreyas is a well-deserving captain,” he added.
Suryakumar is only the third Indian captain, after MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, to have won the T20 World Cup.
While his record as captain has been impressive, his form with the bat has remained a major concern for some time.
“It’s a tough decision – someone who has led you in the world cup – it’s not the easiest thing. Partly the form and partly how we go forward is always at the back of your mind. Going ahead, with the new captain, in this case Shreyas Iyer, was in our opinion the right call,” he said.
What Prompted Selectors To Pick Shreyas Iyer?
Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and followed it up with a runners-up finish for Punjab Kings last year. During IPL 2026, PBKS remained unbeaten in their first seven matches under his leadership before narrowly missing out on a playoff spot by just one point.
Alongside his leadership credentials, Iyer’s consistent performances with the bat further strengthened his case, ultimately convincing Agarkar and the selection panel.
“With regards to Shreyas, we have seen what he has done over the last few years, leading different franchises. (He) won the final once, and from there a tougher season this year after a great start. We have seen everything that a captain possibly can (handle). His own performances have been really good,” Agarkar said.
“He was quite close to getting into the (T20) World Cup squad as well. With Surya still there, there was no room for him, so he is in my opinion a stand-out candidate with enough experience now having led in the T20 format; this is obviously a different challenge,” he added.
