The western coast of India, along the Arabian Sea, boasts numerous stunning locales. From pristine beaches and Malabar hills to coconut groves and tranquil backwaters, the area is rich in natural beauty.
Additionally, this coastline is home to places of historical significance and distinct identities, some of which are more commonly recognised by their nicknames than their official names. One such place, known by a unique nickname, is a district referred to as the ‘Eyebrow of the Arabian Sea’. Let’s explore the story behind this name.
India has over 750 districts, including some Union Territories. Among these is Mahe district, part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, which draws attention due to its distinctive shape and location along the Kerala border, resembling an eyebrow on the Arabian Sea. Despite not being widely famous, Mahe district holds a notable position due to its name and geographic setting, which further accentuates its cultural and geographical identity.
What led to the nickname?
The name Mahe district has roots in local language and geography. Situated by the Arabian Sea on Kerala’s border, locals refer to it in Malayalam as ‘Maiyaji’, where ‘Mayya’ means eyebrow and ‘Aji’ means sea or mouth of the sea. Hence, ‘Maiyaji’ translates to ‘eyebrow of the sea’. Geographically, Mahe’s coastal location and shape have contributed to its title as the ‘eyebrow of the Arabian Sea’.
Historically, like other parts of Puducherry, Mahe was under French rule from 1720 to 1954. The influence of over 200 years of French presence is evident in the district’s ancient buildings, road designs, and town planning. It is believed that the district was named after a French governor named Mahe. Though Mahe district showcases a blend of Indian and European cultures, its name is thought to be derived from the governor’s surname.
Mahe, the ‘eyebrow of the Arabian Sea,’ also stands out for being the smallest district in India, covering an area of just 9 square kilometers. Located on the west coast, Mahe is administratively part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, which is situated on the east.
