Woman Dies During Delivery In UP, Family Claims Hospital Left Abdomen Unstitched

A doctor in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district has been booked after an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker and her newborn baby died during childbirth, triggering allegations of medical negligence.

As reproted by The Indian Express, the deceased woman, identified as 35-year-old Poonam Devi, was admitted to a private hospital in Hardoi after experiencing labour pains. According to her family, doctors assured them that the delivery would be normal and proceeded with treatment.

However, complications reportedly arose during the delivery process. Both Poonam and her newborn died, leading family members to accuse the hospital and attending doctor of negligence.

Relatives alleged that the doctor failed to provide proper medical care despite

signs that the delivery was becoming complicated. They claimed timely intervention or referral to a higher medical facility could have saved both the mother and the child.

The incident sparked protests by family members and local residents, who demanded action against those responsible.

Following a complaint from the victim’s family, police registered an FIR against the doctor under relevant sections related to causing death by negligence and launched an investigation.

Health department officials have also begun an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities are expected to examine medical records, treatment procedures and whether established protocols were followed during the delivery.

Poonam had been working as an ASHA worker, a key frontline health worker under India’s public healthcare system, helping connect rural communities with government health services.

The deaths have raised fresh concerns over maternal healthcare and the quality of medical services available in smaller towns and rural areas.

Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and the health department’s inquiry.
