Captain Kylian Mbappé scored two goals for France in the FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place play-off match against England on Saturday (July 18) to finish his campaign with 10 goals in eight matches.
Mbappé scored twice in the second half of the match played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, but his efforts were not enough to help Les Bleus avoid a 4-6 defeat against England.
By taking his tally to 10 goals in FIFA World Cup 2026, Mbappé entered his name into the record books. The 27-year-old French star became only the fourth player in FIFA World Cup history to score at least 10 goals in a single edition of the tournament.
Hungary legend Sandor Kocsis was the first player to reach the 10-goal mark in a single FIFA World Cup edition. He achieved the feat
in 1954, scoring 11 goals in just five matches.
In the 1958 edition, France forward Just Fontaine played six matches and scored 13 goals. Fontaine’s tally of 13 goals remains the record for the most goals scored by a player in a single FIFA World Cup edition.

The last player to score 10 goals in a single World Cup before Mbappé was West Germany’s Gerd Muller. Muller scored 10 goals for his country during the 1970 FIFA World Cup.
In this year’s FIFA World Cup, apart from scoring 10 goals, Mbappé also provided four assists. He finished the tournament with a total of 14 goal contributions.
Only two players — Brazil’s Ademir and France’s Just Fontaine — have been involved in more goals in a single World Cup edition.
