ASTRO’s Cha Eun-Woo Breaks Silence On Rs 126.5 Crore Tax Case, Apologises To Fans

ASTRO member and actor Cha Eun-Woo has issued his first personal statement amid ongoing tax evasion allegations amounting to ₩20.0 billion (approximately $13.8 million/ INR 126.5 crore). Days after his agency Fantagio responded to reports surrounding the case, the K-pop idol addressed fans directly, offering a sincere apology and promising full cooperation with authorities.

The singer-turned-actor expressed regret over causing concern and disappointment, particularly to fans and colleagues who have supported him throughout his career. Cha Eun-Woo stated that he would accept the authorities’ final decision and live with a stronger sense of responsibility going forward.

Cha Eun-Woo Issues Personal Apology

Sharing a handwritten statement on Instagram, Cha Eun-Woo wrote, “I sincerely

bow my head and apologise for causing concern and disappointment to many people due to various recent matters involving me. Taking this incident as an opportunity, I have deeply reflected on whether my attitude toward my duty as a citizen of the Republic of Korea, particularly regarding tax payments, was sufficiently rigorous.”

He further added, “For the past few days, I have spent time contemplating and reflecting on what words I should offer first to convey even a little bit of my regret to those who were hurt by me. I was worried that a lengthy explanation might sound like an excuse or even cause further fatigue, but I came to the conclusion that it is my duty to address this matter directly and offer my apology.”

Cha Eun-Woo revealed that he wrote the statement after completing his military duties for the day, clarifying that his enlistment was not an attempt to avoid the controversy but a responsibility that could not be postponed further.

Admitting that the misunderstanding stemmed partly from his own shortcomings, he continued, “If I were not a soldier at the moment, I would want to personally visit and bow my head to all those who were harmed by this incident. With that sentiment, I am writing this letter with all my sincerity.”

Reflecting on his 11-year career, the actor added, “For the long period of the past 11 years, despite having more shortcomings than possessions, I was able to be in this undeserved position as Cha Eun Woo thanks to your unreserved love and support.”

He concluded by stating that he would participate sincerely in all upcoming tax-related procedures and reflect on himself more rigorously.

More About The Tax Evasion Allegations

According to reports in Korean media, Cha Eun-Woo is accused of establishing a one-person agency to reduce his income tax liability. Similar structures have previously been linked to tax-related controversies involving other celebrities.

South Korea’s National Tax Service (NTS) has reportedly imposed an additional tax assessment of approximately $13.8 million, making it one of the largest tax penalties ever issued to a Korean celebrity.
