Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi continued his impressive form by defeating his Uzbek opponent, Shamsiddin Vokhidov in a decisive attacking game, while world champion D Gukesh drew with Frederik Svane of Germany in the first game of the third round of the Chess World Cup on Friday.
In addition to Erigaisi, Grandmaster P Harikrishna also took the lead with a finely-crafted victory against young GM Daniel Dardha of Belgium. With both Erigaisi and Harikrishna securing wins with the white pieces, a draw would suffice for them to advance to the fourth round.
In the round of 64, R Praggnanandhaa drew his first game with Robert Hovhannisyan of Armenia, starting with the black pieces, while Vidit Gujrathi drew with Sam Shankland in his bid for the fourth round.
Erigaisi achieved his third consecutive victory in the knockout event, playing with the white pieces in a Queen-pawn opening, where he found excellent resources and dominated Vokhidov in a one-sided match.
Harikrishna continued his success, showcasing his skills as a brilliant attacker. He is the seasoned Grandmaster who famously assisted Gukesh in the World Championship title match.
