Singer Trey Songz was arrested earlier this month in connection with an alleged assault at a New York City nightclub, according to reports. The incident is said to have taken place in the early hours of December 4 in Manhattan.
The 41-year-old singer, whose real name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, appeared at Manhattan criminal court on Sunday. Prosecutors told the court that Neverson was at Dramma Night Club in Times Square with his group when an argument broke out after a staff member informed him that the venue was preparing to shut for the night.
As per the New York Post, the club was set to close around 4:25 am. Prosecutors said Neverson became “needlessly irate” after being told to leave and allegedly punched a club employee, causing “swelling
and substantial pain.”
Neverson was formally arraigned on an assault charge related to the nightclub incident. He is also facing a separate charge of mischief stemming from an unrelated incident at Mira, a restaurant and hookah lounge in Manhattan, earlier the same morning. In that case, he allegedly damaged property worth $1,500, including hookahs, DJ equipment and sofas.
After the hearing, the Mr Steal Your Girl singer was seen leaving court wearing a black face mask. He was granted supervised release, with the judge noting his past legal issues while making the decision. Neverson is scheduled to return to court on February 18.
Prosecutors also said that the Dramma Night Club employee has been granted an order of protection against Neverson, who they described as a regular patron of the venue.
Responding to the charges, Songz’s lawyer issued a statement to Page Six. “Neverson was charged in connection with an incident that occurred last week. He is cooperating fully and looks forward to the facts coming to light,” the statement said.
The lawyer further added, “Separately, last night Trey was confronted by individuals who instigated a confrontation and attempted to surround him. His security intervened to protect him and contain the situation, and an altercation occurred in the ensuing confusion.”
The statement concluded, “Public figures are often treated as targets for instigation in pursuit of headlines or financial gain. We are confident the facts will speak for themselves.”
