Bengaluru-based real estate developer CJ Roy allegedly shot himself dead on Friday at his office on Langford Road during ongoing Income Tax Department searches. He reportedly used his licensed firearm while I-T officials were present.
The city police said Roy suffered a fatal gunshot injury and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.
Income Tax officials confirmed that search operations had been underway at his premises for the past three days, as part of an investigation into the financial affairs of his business group.
Who Was CJ Roy?
Roy Chiriankandath Joseph, popularly known as CJ Roy, was the founder and chairman of the Confident Group, a leading real estate developer with a strong presence in Kerala and Bengaluru. Originally
from Kerala, Roy built the company over more than two decades into a major player in the housing and commercial property sector.
According to the company’s website, the Confident Group has completed over 200 projects and serves more than 23,000 customers across Kerala and Karnataka. Under Roy’s leadership, the firm consistently ranked among the region’s top developers.
Roy held a Doctorate in Business Administration from SBS Business School in Zurich and had earlier worked with Fortune 100 companies before entering the construction and real estate sector in the late 1990s.

A known automobile enthusiast, Roy owned a collection of luxury and vintage vehicles. Despite this, those close to him said his favourite car remained a Maruti 800 purchased early in his career, which he often said kept him grounded.
He was also known for his philanthropic work. At a real estate exhibition a few years ago, Roy had announced that he would gift flats to winners from underprivileged backgrounds. In addition to real estate, he had interests in cinema and produced four Malayalam films.
Following his death, the Confident Group paid tribute to Roy in a Facebook post, calling him its “beloved leader” and saying his values and vision would continue to guide the company. The firm called his passing as a “sudden and irreparable loss” to the organisation and its people.
