Chennai, May 31 (PTI) PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday urged the TVK government to take decisive steps to fill growing vacancies in government departments, so that the youth of the state will get jobs.
“More than 5,000 people retired from various Tamil Nadu government departments by the end of May, taking the total vacancies in the state government service beyond 5,00,000, which meant a vacancy rate of 41.7 per cent in government departments. This is destabilising public administration,” the former union minister said in a statement here.
There are more than 12 lakh sanctioned posts in Tamil Nadu government departments, public sector undertakings and local bodies in the state, Anbumani said and claimed, “Most of the current vacancies stem
largely from officials’ failure over the years to take action to fill vacancies”.
“On average, about 50,000 government posts fall vacant each year, but only roughly 10,000 of those are filled annually”, he said adding, “as a result, the number of vacancies has steadily increased over the past two decades. Because sufficient numbers of candidates are not being recruited for public service, government employment has become a distant dream for many educated young people.” Pointing out that when the DMK came to power in 2021, it promised to provide government jobs to a total of 5,50,000 people, he alleged: “But over five years the party has provided government employment to only about 50,000 people in total”.
“Its promise to regularise temporary and part-time teachers and staff has also not been fulfilled”, he said. PTI SNR SNR ADB
