Indian wushu athlete Aparna secured a gold medal in the women’s 52kg category at the 11th Sanda World Cup in Macau on Thursday. In the final, Aparna defeated reigning world champion Thi Phuong Nga Ngo of Vietnam in straight sets.
According to the Wushu Association of India, this was India’s first gold medal in the event, which began on May 12.
The victory was especially satisfying for Aparna, as she had previously lost to the same opponent in the final of the World Wushu Championships held in Brazil in September 2025.
Competitive wushu is divided into two main branches: Taolu and Sanda.
Taolu combines elements of gymnastics and martial arts, with competitors judged and scored on movements that include stances, kicks, punches, balances, jumps, sweeps
and throws. Sanda is a modern unarmed combat sport developed from traditional wushu techniques, primarily involving punching, kicking, throwing, wrestling and defensive skills.
