After leaving Mumbai, former India U-19 World Cup-winning team captain Prithvi Shaw joined Maharashtra, and on Wednesday (October 15) he made his Ranji Trophy debut for them at Greenfield International
Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram against Kerala. But Prithvi, who scored a century (120) in the second innings of his first-ever Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai against Tamil Nadu at Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot (January 2017), failed to open his account for Maharashtra on Wednesday.
He faced four balls during his stay at the crease on Wednesday morning but could not manage to score even one run. He was trapped in front of the wickets by MD Nidheesh on the fourth ball of the first over.
Siddhesh Veer came out to bat at No. 3 for Maharashtra after Shaw’s departure, and on the next ball (fifth of the first over), Nidheesh dismissed him as well. Veer was caught by Kerala captain and wicketkeeper Mohammed Azharuddeen. He made a golden duck.
Shaw’s opening partner, Arshin Kulkarni, who has also played as an opener for India in the U-19 World Cup 2024, failed to open his account. The left-handed batting all-rounder was Rohan Kunnummal for a golden duck off Nedumankuzhy Basil’s bowling.
At the time of Kulkarni’s dismissal, Maharashtra were struggling at 0/3 in 1.1 overs. Maharashtra captain Ankit Bawne was the fourth batter to get out in the morning session on Wednesday. Like Shaw, Siddhesh and Kulkrani, Bawne also failed to open his account.
He was bowled by Basil on the second ball of the fourth over.
Shaw’s record in FC cricket
Shaw has played a total of 58 first-class matches so far and, with the help of 13 centuries and 18 fifties, has managed to score a total of 4456 runs. The right-handed batter, who also scored a century on his Test debut for India against the West Indies in Rajkot on October 4, 2018, has a batting average of 46.02 in red-ball cricket.
He was dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad midway through last season due to poor fitness and discipline-related issues. He did play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy but was not considered for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Before making his Ranji Trophy debut for Maharashtra on Wednesday, Shaw played a practice match against Mumbai last week, and in that fixture, he scored a century in the first innings.
