Attari Border Now Open For E-Visa Holders As India Expands Entry Network To 88 Ports

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has notified 11 more international ports for entry by foreign travellers holding Indian e-visas, taking the total number of such designated entry points in the country to 88, according to government information released on Monday.

The newly added ports include nine land ports and two airports. Among the latest additions is Attari, the land port on the India-Pakistan border.

The two airports added to the network are Bhopal and Tirupati.

Nine Land Ports, Two Airports Added

The nine newly added land ports are Agartala, Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, Moreh and Attari.

The two newly designated airports are Bhopal and Tirupati.

The MHA said these international ports were notified on different occasions from January 1, 2026, to date.

With the latest additions, foreign nationals holding eligible Indian e-visas can now enter the country through a total of 88 international ports, comprising 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports.

The expansion is aimed at making the e-visa facility more accessible and useful for international travellers visiting India.

37 Airports Now Allow E-Visa Entry

The 37 airports designated as international ports include Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bagdogra, Bhogapuram, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi, Gaya, Goa (Dabolim), Goa (Mopa), Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kannur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Port Blair, Pune, Surat, Thiruvananthapuram, Trichy, Varanasi, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Bhopal and Tirupati.

The 38 designated seaports are Agatti, Alang, Bedi Bandar, Bhavnagar, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Cuddalore, Dahej, Dhamra, Haldia, Hazira, Kakinada, Ennore-Kamarajar, Kandla, Karaikal, Kattupalli, Kolkata, Kollam, Krishnapatnam, Mandvi, Mormugao, Mumbai, Mundra, Nagapattinam, New Mangalore, Nhava Sheva, Paradeep, Pipavav, Porbandar, Port Blair, Sikka, Tuna Tekra, Tuticorin, Vallarpadam, Visakhapatnam, Vizhinjam-Kovalam and Vizhinjam.

E-Visa Available To Nationals Of 172 Countries

India currently offers e-visas to nationals of 172 countries.

The facility was introduced in 2014, with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), for nationals of 43 countries as part of efforts to liberalise and simplify India’s visa regime.

The e-visa facility is currently available under 17 categories, including Tourist, Mountaineering, six Business Visa sub-categories (B-1 to B-6), four Medical Visa sub-categories (M-1 to M-4), two Student Visa sub-categories (S-1 and S-2), Transit, X-1 (Miscellaneous) and Group Visitor Visa (Cruise).

The government said approximately 95 per cent of e-visa applications are processed in less than 72 hours. Electronic visas now account for roughly 78 per cent of the total visas issued by India.

Pakistani Passport Holders Excluded From E-Visa Facility

The e-visa facility is not available to international travellers holding Pakistani passports or to people of Pakistani origin, according to the government’s visa information.

Such travellers are required to apply for a regular visa through an Indian Mission.

The MHA said the government has taken several significant initiatives in recent years to liberalise, streamline and simplify India’s visa regime, particularly to facilitate legitimate foreign travellers.

At the same time, the government said it has been strengthening the technological infrastructure supporting the visa system to enhance internal security.

The MHA described the expansion of designated entry points as another step towards increasing the attractiveness and utility of India’s electronic visa facility.

The government statement said these initiatives have been taken under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with the twin objectives of facilitating legitimate international travel and strengthening India’s technological and internal-security infrastructure.
