Pakistan Cricket Board and Asian Cricket Council chief Mohsin Naqvi was on Sunday, December 21, stopped by a Pakistan fan, who requested him to appoint Sarfaraz Khan as the mentor of the senior men’s team. The latter was in charge of the Pakistan U19 team, which won the Asia Cup, beating arch-rivals India.
Such was the buzz around Sarfaraz, the U19 team’s mentor, that a Pakistan fan stopped Naqvi at the venue after the game and asked him to make a promise ahead of the T20 World Cup.
The win against India was the third time Pakistan have defeated their arch-rivals in a final with Sarfaraz involved. He first led Pakistan to a 38-run victory over India in the 2004 ICC U19 World Cup final in Colombo, before leading the senior team to a famous Champions
Trophy win against India at The Oval in 2017.
On Sunday at the ICC Academy Ground, Sarfaraz watched on from the dugout in his role as mentor as Pakistan U19 outplayed India in a one-sided final, reclaiming the Asia Cup title for the first time in 13 years and only the second time in their history.
After the victory over India, a video went viral on social media showing a Pakistan fan stopping Naqvi as he was leaving the venue in Dubai. In the clip, the fan can be heard saying, “Sarfaraz kabhi dhoka nahi deta” (“Sarfaraz never lets you down”), a line popularised by the Bollywood film PK.
“He won you the Champions Trophy in 2017. Today, we won another title. Please make him the mentor for the T20 World Cup (2026). Please,” the fan added. Watch the video here:
