New Zealand are confident that opening batter Devon Conway will be available for the second Test against England at The Oval, despite his lengthy return trip home for the birth of his second child.
Conway travelled back to Wellington after New Zealand’s 115-run defeat in the opening Test at Lord’s, where he scored 1 and 41 in a match dominated by bowlers. The left-hander has temporarily left the squad to spend time with his family but is expected to rejoin the team before the series resumes in London next week.
Confirming the development, New Zealand Cricket issued a statement on Thursday saying: “Black Caps batter Devon Conway has briefly returned home to New Zealand to welcome the birth of his second child.
“Conway will spend some time at home
with family before flying back to London ahead of the second Test against England at The Oval, starting Wednesday 17 June.”
The news comes as the Black Caps look to recover from a disappointing start to the three-match series. Players have been given a short break following the loss at Lord’s, with training at The Oval scheduled to resume ahead of the second Test.
Pacer’s Fitness Also A Concern
New Zealand are also monitoring the fitness of fast bowler Matt Henry, who struggled with back spasms during the first Test. The seamer was limited in his workload after experiencing discomfort on the opening day, prompting concerns over his availability for the next match.
Captain Tom Latham remains hopeful Henry will be fit in time for selection.
“I think it’s a day-by-day case with Henners,” Latham said. “Fingers crossed, he keeps progressing the way he has from day one to where he is now (on the fourth day).”
While New Zealand focus on levelling the series, England head into the second Test amid significant off-field distractions. The hosts have been forced into changes following a controversy involving key squad members earlier in the week, adding further intrigue ahead of a crucial contest at The Oval.
