Filmmaker Jeethu Joseph has finally confirmed what fans have been hoping to hear: Drishyam 3 will hit cinemas first in Malayalam before releasing in any other language. In an exclusive interview, the director
said he wanted to keep the tradition alive, just like with the earlier two films. “We will release the Malayalam version first, just like before,” he said, explaining that the story belongs to the audience that made it iconic.
The Drishyam series, starring Mohanlal in the lead role, is widely regarded as one of India’s finest suspense thrillers. The first film, released in 2013, told the gripping story of Georgekutty, a simple yet sharp-minded man who cleverly outsmarted the police to protect his family after a tragic incident. Its sequel, Drishyam 2, continued the tale years later, revealing how the cracks began to appear in Georgekutty’s carefully constructed life.
Keeping It Real and Rooted
Even with its growing global appeal, Joseph believes Drishyam should always stay true to where it began. “Malayalam audiences have lived with Georgekutty from the start. They deserve to see how his story ends before anyone else,” he said. The director shared that the script is almost ready and that he’s been spending long hours perfecting it. “There’s a lot of pressure, but also a lot of love. I want to end this story in a way that feels honest and complete,” he added.
Joseph also hinted that while there are discussions about releasing Drishyam 3 in other languages later, his main focus right now is on making the Malayalam version as gripping and emotionally powerful as the first two.
Fans Can’t Wait for the Final Chapter
It’s been more than a decade since audiences first met Georgekutty, yet the excitement around his story hasn’t faded. After Drishyam 2 ended on a mysterious note, fans have been waiting to see how things finally end. Social media is already buzzing with theories, but Joseph has stayed tight-lipped about the plot. One thing’s certain: expectations are sky-high.
Drishyam 1 and 2 stood out for their honesty and powerful storytelling. Their massive success not only cemented the franchise’s legacy in Indian cinema but also inspired several remakes across different Indian languages and even international adaptations.
If Drishyam 3 delivers the closure fans are hoping for, it could go down as one of Indian cinema’s most satisfying trilogies, a fitting farewell to a story that redefined the family-crime thriller genre.
