Six members of a family were killed after the car they were traveling in fell into an 800-foot deep gorge in Maharashtra’s Nashik district.
The family was reportedly travelling in an Innova vehicle to visit the Saptashrungi Devi temple when the mishap occurred in the ghats region.
According to a report in India Today, the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to overtake near the Bhavari waterfall, a section notorious for its sharp bends and narrow roadway. The car veered off the edge and crashed into the valley below, killing all six occupants instantly.
The deceased have been identified as Kirti Patel (50), Rasila Patel (50), Vitthal Patel (65), Lata Patel (60), Pachan Patel (60), and Maniben Patel (60).
Emergency teams, including
the local police, the Saptashrungi Gad Disaster Management Team, and the Saptashrungi Gad Gram Panchayat, reached the site promptly. However, rescuers faced severe difficulties due to the steep drop and dense terrain, with the wreckage lying nearly 800 feet below the road. An additional rescue unit from Nashik was called in to aid recovery, which is expected to take several hours given the challenging geography.
Locals have voiced frustration over the condition of the ghat road, claiming that poor maintenance and inadequate safety measures contributed to the accident. They criticised the Public Works Department for failing to repair the hazardous stretch despite repeated complaints.
Police have launched an investigation into the tragedy, examining whether factors such as road conditions, speeding, or driver error played a role in the crash.
Student Killed After Vehicle Hits His Bike
In a separate incident, a 22-year-old student of Galgotias University died after an unidentified vehicle hit his motorcycle in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar district on Sunday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Vivek Kumar Sharma. The police took the body into custody and sent it for a post-mortem. A case has been registered in this regard and an investigation was launched.
