A woman constable stepped in to help a distressed mother during a recruitment exam in Odisha’s Malkangiri district.
Constable Rajani Majhi breastfed and comforted a crying infant for hours so the mother could focus on her test.
Crying Infant Disrupts Exam
The incident took place on Sunday at the Bibiguda examination centre during the RI and Amin recruitment exams. Bhairavi Mandal, appearing for the test, was struggling as her one-and-a-half-month-old baby cried uncontrollably outside the hall. Despite her husband’s attempts to soothe the infant, Mandal grew anxious and even reportedly considered leaving the exam midway.
Seeing her distress, Constable Majhi, who has served with the Malkangiri Reserve Police for seven years, stepped forward to help.
“That woman was in a dilemma about whether to appear for the exam, as her baby was crying. I asked her to go ahead and assured her that I would take care of the baby,” she told India Today.
‘I Understood Her Condition…’
“I could feel her pain because I also have a nine-month-old child. I understood her mental condition and assured her that I would take care of the baby,” Majhi said, as per Odisha Bytes.
For nearly two hours, the constable comforted the infant. She even breastfed the baby to calm him down.
“I felt very happy doing this because, as a mother, I understood her situation,” she said.
After completing her exam, a tearful Mandal thanked the constable for her kindness.
Mandal said, “When my baby was crying, I decided not to attend the exam. But the constable Didi came forward and assured me that she would take responsibility for the infant during the exam hour. She took my baby in her lap and allowed me to write the exam. I was still worried about my baby’s situation, but Constable Didi managed it well. I must thank her and the other staff; I will be grateful to her forever.”
The Odisha Police shared the story on X, calling it a “unique example of motherhood.”

Earlier this year, a Tamil Nadu policewoman helped a woman give birth in an autorickshaw. In August, officers from the 15 Velampalayam police station heard a woman crying near a private school on Ring Road in Thirumurugan Poondi. R Gokila, a Grade Two police constable with nursing training, rushed to help and found the woman already in labour. She helped deliver the baby in the autorickshaw and then transported both mother and newborn to ESI Hospital.
