New Delhi, Jul 8 (PTI) German luxury carmaker BMW is looking to cross annual sales of 20,000 units in India for the first time this year on the back of record volumes in the first half of 2026 with EVs and smaller cities playing a significant role, a senior company official said on Wednesday.
In the January-June period this year, BMW Group India clocked its highest ever H1 sales at 9,075 cars, up 17 per cent year-on-year (YoY), while in April-June, the company delivered 4,507 cars with 17 per cent growth YoY.
“Absolutely, we are looking at crossing the 20,000 mark for the first time ever. All eyes on that,” BMW Group India President and CEO, Hardeep Singh Brar told PTI when asked if the company is looking at a record annual sales in 2026 on the back
of H1 performance.
He expressed confidence of continuing “with our strong momentum of strong double-digit (growth) even in the second half”.
Commenting on the H1 performance, Brar said new products, strong traction for EVs in the wake of West Asia war, growth from tier II and III, long-wheel base cars and the company’s focus on brand experience for customers paid off.
“We announced about 25 launches at the beginning of the year. We have already done 11 of them in the first half, so that really worked well for us,” he noted, adding 14 more launches are planned in the rest of 2026.
On the sales of EVs, he said,”Because of the West Asia crisis and lot of discussion around fuel prices going up, there was a shift towards electric vehicles, and we being strong in EVs, that really helped us.” In H1, the company said it delivered 2,359 EVs to customers and demand grew 78 per cent YoY and EV penetration to total sales stood at 26 per cent in H1 2026, up from 18 per cent in H1 2025.
Commenting on traction from smaller cities, Brar said,”While our overall numbers have grown by 17 per cent, in the tier two and tier three markets, the growth is in excess of 20 per cent. We’ve been reaching to tier two, tier three markets through our network.” The company is further expanding its network, he said, adding “we want to add 10 more cities by end of this year”.
BMW said in H1, its MINI brand sold 504 cars, clocking 70 per cent growth YoY and the group’s motorcycle arm BMW Motorrad delivered 2,327 units in H1 2026.
The company further said in H1 2026, one out of every four BMWs that was financed was through BMW India Financial Services. PTI RKL ANU ANU
