Setting up WhatsApp Web
To use WhatsApp Web, users need to visit web.whatsapp.com on a desktop browser or open the WhatsApp desktop app. The phone running WhatsApp must be linked by scanning the QR code shown on screen, done once through the Linked Devices option in the mobile app’s settings. Once linked, chats sync automatically, and the connection stays active as long as the phone has an internet connection.
Starting a video call
To make a video call, users need to open
the desired chat within WhatsApp Web and tap the video camera icon at the top right corner of the chat window. This works for both individual chats and group chats, with group video calls supporting multiple participants at once, the same limit that applies on mobile. The call opens in a separate window, with options to mute audio, turn off video or add more participants during an ongoing group call.
Requirements and limitations
A stable internet connection is required on both the desktop and the linked phone, since WhatsApp Web functions as an extension of the mobile app rather than an independent service. Users need a working camera and microphone on their desktop or laptop for the call to function, and most modern browsers such as Chrome, Edge and Firefox support the feature. The WhatsApp desktop app, available for both Windows and Mac, offers the same calling functionality and tends to be more stable for longer calls compared to the browser version.
Things to keep in mind
Video call quality on WhatsApp Web depends on the internet speed of both parties, and calls may drop if the linked phone loses connectivity. The feature is available to all users with an updated version of WhatsApp, and no separate account or additional setup is needed beyond linking the device once.
