US First Lady Melania Trump on Friday said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had responded to her letter of concern about children who became victims to the Russia-Ukraine war and eight children have
rejoined in past 24 hours.
BBC quoted Melania as saying that after an “open channel of communication” with Putin, Ukranian children displaced in the war had been reunited with families.
The letter was hand delivered to Putin during his Alaska visit in August.
Parts of the letter was shared by President Donald Trump on social media. BBC cited the letter as stating that the first lady pleads with Putin to protect children, writing that doing so “will do more than serve Russia alone” and “will serve humanity itself”.
“Eight children have been rejoined with their families during the past 24 hours. Each child has lived in turmoil because of the war in Ukraine,” she said.
Of the eight children, three who were separated from the families were displaced to Russia because of the front-line fighting, Melania said.
She further said that the children’s reunification was facilitated by both Ukraine and Russia and she had received a detailed report with photos and the “identities and circumstances” of each child.
The US government “confirmed the facts”, she added.
According to The Guardian, 23 Ukrainian children and adolescents were brought out of Russian-occupied areas of the country to territory under Kyiv’s control.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak, in a Telegram message on Thursday, said the rescue was part of President’s “Bring Kids Back UA” programme aimed at bringing to safe areas children deported to Russia or confined to Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine.
As per a report by the United Nations report in March, an estimated 737,000 children were internally displaced by the hostilities as of December 2024.
