Akola (Maharashtra), Jun 11 (PTI) A woman and her 10-year-old son drowned while taking a ritual bath in the Katepurna river at Shamsherpur village in the district on Thursday morning, police said.
The deceased were identified as Vrushali Haridas Khot (35) and her son Swaraj (10).
Five to six women from the village had gone to the river for a holy bath early in the morning on the occasion of Adhik Maas and Ekadashi, said a police official.
Swaraj entered deep water and began to drown. Vrushali jumped into the river to save him, but neither of them knew how to swim and were swept into deeper waters, the official said.
Two other women, identified as Madhuri Khot and Meera Chaudhary, also entered the river to help but got trapped in the water.
Hearing
their cries for help, local youths rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Madhuri Khot and Meera Chaudhary. Vrushali and her son, however, could not be saved.
