Chennai, Aug 31 (PTI) Spiritual leader Jaggi Vasudev, popularly known as Sadhguru, pledged Rs 1 crore to Nepal’s Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund following devastating flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border.
Addressing the ‘In Solidarity With Nepal’ event in Kathmandu on Sunday, he proposed the urgent creation of a five-nation Himalayan Board involving India, China, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan to jointly address natural disasters in the region.
The catastrophic floods have left thousands missing, including 77 Isha Sacred Walks participants and three Isha volunteers who were in the region when the disaster struck.
In a press release issued by the Isha Yoga Centre, Sadhguru emphasised that the fragile Himalayan ecosystem transcends political
boundaries. “Even if you cannot administer it as one body, at least consultation must happen as one body,” he said.
He noted that the unprecedented scale of the disaster, caused by a massive glacial icefall, was far beyond what Nepal could be expected to manage alone.
During an interaction with actor Manisha Koirala, Sadhguru urged the public not to attribute the tragedy to divine or mystical causes, saying physical phenomena are governed by physical laws and that such explanations diminish human suffering.
He also announced that special rituals for those who died in the disaster would be performed at the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore.
The floods struck the Nepal-Tibet region on August 26, causing extensive damage in several districts and affecting people from several districts of Maharashtra, the report said.
The death toll from the disaster crossed 900 on Monday, while more than 4,000 people remained missing, according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. PTI JR SSK
