Bengaluru, Jun 4 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday said Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed the Mekedatu project across the Cauvery river, irrespective of which party is in power in the neighbouring state.
He said the issue of granting approval for the project now rests with the Centre.
“They (Tamil Nadu) have been opposing this for the last thirty-forty years, the matter has already been decided by the court. We have already given our DPR to the Centre; they will look into it and the matter lies with the central government,” Shivakumar said in response to a question about the Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu opposing the Mekedatu project.
Speaking to reporters here, he said “Irrespective of the party in Tamil Nadu, they
will definitely do their politics. They already went to the Supreme Court and filed a review petition, the court has taken a decision and rejected their appeal. We will do our job, let them do theirs.” The Supreme Court has dismissed a review petition filed by Tamil Nadu against the November 2025 judgment that declined to consider its petition against Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu project.
The Court in November had rejected a plea by the Tamil Nadu government against construction of the Mekedatu project across the Cauvery river by Karnataka, terming it “premature” .
It had then said, the plan would be approved only after considering the objections of the State as well as the opinion of the expert bodies, Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) and the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).
Mekedatu is a multi-purpose (drinking water and power) project proposed by Karnataka, which involves building a balancing reservoir near Kanakapura in Ramanagara district (now renamed as Bengaluru South district).
Tamil Nadu has been opposing the project, raising apprehensions that the state would be affected if the project takes shape.
The project, once completed, is aimed at ensuring drinking water to Bengaluru and neighbouring areas (4.75 tmcft); it also can generate 400 MW power, according to officials. PTI KSU ROH
