The International Cricket Council has decided to replace Bangladesh with Scotland at the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026, slated for India and Sri Lanka, following the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s decision not to travel to India for the event.
The unprecedented fallout between the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council grabbed all the headlines as an issue that started with the release of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders following the counsel of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, ended with the Bangla Tigers being replaced at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
BCB’s decision to not travel to the ICC event could derail the fortunes of the sport in the nation in multiple ways, impacting
the board, players and the nation as a whole.
IPL Door Shut?
Following ICC’s replacement of Bangladesh, the participation of players from the nation at the Indian Premier League goes up in air. It is highly likely that the Bangla Tigers might be extended the same treatment as Pakistani players with the BCCI opting to bar players from the nations over the tussle as diplomacy between the boards seems to have sunk to an all-time low.
Financial Strap
Following their withdrawal from the event, BCB stand to lose around $25 million in the annual ICC revenue and a further $500,000 in preparation cost, which the world body wouldn’t hold on to.
A huge chunk of the players’ wages come from the ICC’s dispatch and senior Bangladesh players have brought to notice the lack of supplement income from BCB’s end. And with BCB and ICC at loggerheads, it is the perhaps the players who stand to take the biggest hit in terms of their purse.
Future Misery And Rolling The Development Back
BCB’s decision to not play their role at the ICC T20 spectacle, also stand to lose out on the right to host any future events, unless the impasse has been significantly bridged. Bangladesh were supposed to host the 2031 Men’s ODI World Cup, and that privilege might dissipate if the current scenario continues and the bodies do not work out their differences, hampering the direction of cricket in Bangladesh.
